Clarity Circles · Group coaching

You don't have to work out what's next on your own.

Clarity Circles are small groups of eight people going through the same change in life. We meet for 90 minutes a week, for eight weeks, and work out what comes next, together.

Why a circle?

I've seen it again and again in my own life: the biggest changes happened in groups. The research backs this up.

You're not the only one

Psychiatrist Irvin Yalom spent decades studying groups. He found that one of the most powerful things a group gives you is simply realising that others feel the same way. The isolation starts to lift the moment you hear someone else say what you've been thinking.

You see what's possible

Watching someone a few steps ahead of you gives you hope that change is possible for you too.

You actually follow through

In a study by Dr Gail Matthews at Dominican University, people who shared their goals and sent weekly progress updates to someone achieved far more than those who kept their goals to themselves. A circle gives you that every week, with seven people who'll notice.

The mountain looks smaller

Researchers asked people to judge how steep a hill looked. People standing next to a friend saw the same hill as less steep than people standing alone.

My story

The groups got me there

I've lived this.

Toastmasters

10th in the world

I came 10th in the World Championships of Public Speaking, out of about 32,000 people who started. I didn't get there alone. I got there because of the support and encouragement of my Toastmasters club, month after month.

From stick figures to an exhibition

I went from "I can't draw a stick figure" to exhibiting my work in three years. That happened because my art therapy group and teacher witnessed and encouraged me. On my own at home, it would never have happened.

Rim of Africa

7 of 9 traverses

I've completed 7 of the 9 traverses of the Rim of Africa, one of the toughest hikes in South Africa. Every one of them in a group of ten, with two guides. I simply couldn't have achieved this on my own.

I understand groups, because groups changed my life. That's why I started Clarity Circles.

The in-between is the hardest part

Stuck

Something big has ended or changed: work, a marriage, children leaving home, a move, a loss. The old life doesn't fit anymore, and the new one hasn't shown up yet. From the outside you're coping. On the inside you're tired, a bit lost, and not sure who you are now. The people around you mean well, but they want you to be fine, so you stop talking about it.

What clear feels like

Clear doesn't mean having it all worked out. It means you know what matters to you now. You've made a decision or two that's truly yours. You feel lighter, because you've stopped carrying it alone. And you have seven people who know exactly where you started, and how far you've come.

How a circle works

Every session has the same simple shape, so you can relax into it.

  1. 01

    Our agreements

A quick reminder of how we work together, so everyone feels safe.

  2. 02

    Check-in

Everyone shares where they're feeling clearer this week, and where they still feel stuck. No fixing, no advice.

  3. 03

    The centre of the circle

Each week one person brings something they're stuck on. The group listens, then shares what they notice and what resonates, rather than telling you what to do.

  4. 04

    Closing round

Everyone names one thing they're taking away. The person in the centre says their next step out loud, so the group can ask about it next week.

How we work together

Four simple agreements

We agree these in the first session and come back to them every week.

Speak about what's true for you now

Share what you're thinking and feeling today, rather than telling long stories about the past.

No advice

We don't tell each other what to do. Instead we share what we notice, or what resonates from our own experience.

Say "I"

Speak for yourself. "I feel..." rather than "people always..." or "you know how it is..."

Differences are welcome

We don't all have to agree. Different views are where some of the best learning happens.
